LAW 793

Human Rights in Action Clinic with International Field Experience

Human Rights

LAW 793, the Human Rights in Action Clinic (HRAC) will be offered in the Spring 2027 for 4 credits. Students enrolled in LAW 927, the Human Rights in Action Clinic—International Field Experience will be automatically enrolled in LAW 793, the Spring semester counterpart for 4 units. LAW 793 continues the J-Term HRAC-International Field Experience, offering students the opportunity  to continue work on projects arising out of the fieldwork using clinical pedagogy to deepen their understanding of substantive human rights law and other relevant law, receive skills training, and contribute positively to the human rights struggles of our partners. Students should review the LAW 927 course description and apply for the J-Term HRAC-International Field Experience if they want to participate in the Spring LAW 793 HRAC. In addition to the projects arising out fieldwork, students may work on one or more projects focused on human rights advocacy in the United States with a local organizational partner. Previous domestic projects have included work with local tribes and the indigenous diaspora in Los Angeles, immigrant rights groups, and incarcerated people. The HRAC works from a model of movement lawyering in the international human rights space. We prioritize the goals of our social movement partners and develop with them collaborative projects that support their struggle for human rights. These projects may include pre-litigation and litigation support, and research and knowledge production to support public policy and social justice advocacy.
The clinic is limited to the 4 students who participate in LAW 927, the J-Term HRAC—International Field Experience. During the semester, we will meet twice a week for a 2-hour seminar that will include engagement with substantive law, skills training, and clinic rounds. We will decide jointly on a meeting time and place based on everyone’s Spring schedules. Enrollment for the Human Rights in Action Clinic with International Field Experience is capped at four students.
