Technology & the Law

This is a three-unit course designed to give students an overview of legal issues relating to personal privacy protection and cyber crime with a focus on the environment in the United States.  The course will seek to convey practical information relating to data protection, office security and problems relating to hacking, ransomware and identify theft.  Major privacy cases and statutes will be reviewed and critically analyzed.  Professor Alben worked in senior management in tech companies for over 20 years before becoming Washington State's first Chief Privacy Officer from 2015-19.  He will bring in guest speakers on cybersecurity and other specialized areas.
