The Program on Understanding Law, Science and Evidence at UCLA Law (PULSE) has launched a platform to publish and promote cutting-edge scholarship on law and policy governing artificial intelligence.

UCLA School of Law alumnus Andrei Iancu ’96

Distinguished UCLA School of Law alumnus Andrei Iancu ’96 returned on Feb. 22 to offer an inside look from the highest reaches of the federal government into the most pressing issues in patent law.

A longtime patent-law lecturer at UCLA Law and former managing partner of Irell & Manella, Iancu was confirmed as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in early 2018. As the head of the USPTO, he oversees one of the primary federal agencies that govern intellectual property rights.

Rapid developments in the sports-betting industry following a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision were the focus of a conference featuring prominent sports agents, executives and attorneys on Feb. 8 at UCLA School of Law.

The event, “All Bets Are On,” was the latest convening of the In Series, sponsored by UCLA Law’s Ziffren Center for Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law.

Professor Beth Colgan became the 42nd winner of UCLA School of Law’s highest faculty honor, the Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching, at a ceremony on April 22.

The award, founded in 1979 by famed legal publisher William Rutter, is presented annually to leading legal educators at five top California law schools.

Stuart Biegel

Stuart Biegel, a longtime member of the faculty at the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and UCLA School of Law died on April 3. He was 73.

A renowned expert in the fields of education law and technology law, Biegel focused his scholarship and teaching on the intersection of technology, privacy and disability rights in both K-12 and higher education.

The UCLA School of Law will recognize and acknowledge Professor Jyoti Nanda at U. Serve L.A. for her dedication to and leadership in strengthening UCLA School of Law's public service ethic.

Fake News and the First Amendment: Free Speech Rules

UCLA School of Law Professor Eugene Volokh, one of the nation's leading experts on free speech and First Amendment law, has launched a series of short, animated videos explaining modern constitutional law issues in clear, concise and often humorous terms. The videos are designed to be understandable and enjoyable for K-12 students, while informative for people of all ages.

UCLA Law Assistant Professor Blake Emerson

UCLA Law Assistant Professor Blake Emerson is the author of The Public's Law: Origins and Architecture of Progressive Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2018). A theory and history of democracy in the American administrative state, the book describes how American Progressive thinkers including John Dewey, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Woodrow Wilson embraced Hegel's view of the connection between bureaucracy and freedom.

Lara Stemple, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and International Student Programs, and Director of Health and Human Rights Law Project, was named as a new co-Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the UC Global Health Institute. To read the full statement please click here.
