A report issued on Jan. 7 by UCLA School of Law’s Criminal Justice Program, the RAND Corporation and other organizations details the extent to which Los Angeles County may divert people with serious mental health disorders away from traditional criminal-justice processes and into community-based clinical programs or permanent supportive housing.

Jocelyn Samuels, the executive director of UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy, was nominated on March 16 to a seat on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency that enforces federal laws barring workplace discrimination.

Amid in-person school closures and global travel restrictions, UCLA School of Law has created online trial competitions for the nearly 10,000 law students and undergraduates whose competitions were cancelled as the world grapples with the COVID-19 crisis.

UCLA School of Law has created expansive databases that keep track of developments related to COVID-19 in prisons and jails nationwide. Launched amid the mounting coronavirus crisis — including reports of infections in high-risk places where large numbers of people are packed into tight quarters — the resources address two key areas.

Five UCLA School of Law professors, including leading scholars in civil rights, human rights and international law, have received appointments to endowed faculty chairs. Four of the chairs are being filled for the first time.

UCLA School of Law Professor Scott Cummings has been awarded the 2020-21 Fulbright-Schuman Chair at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, the preeminent center of research on the European Union.
