As the director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA School of Law and a frequent commentator in the media, Professor Richard Hasen is the nation’s go-to authority on election law. Now, with the fraught 2024 election campaign underway, Hasen is zeroed in on spelling out the stakes.
Throughout history, too many Americans have faced needless barriers to voting. Part of the blame falls on the U.S. Constitution, which does not contain an affirmative right to vote. Richard L. Hasen, Director of UCLA Law’s Safeguarding Democracy Project and author of the new book A Real Right to Vote: How a Constitutional Amendment Can Safeguard American Democracy, draws on troubling stories of state attempts to disenfranchise military voters, women, African Americans, students, former felons, Native Americans, and others, arguing that American democracy can and should do better. Joining Hasen is Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law and leading scholar of the U.S. Constitution, Erwin Chemerinsky.
