In our Student Spotlight series, we hear from UCLA Law students about what brought them to law school, what they love about being on campus, and where they hope their UCLA Law education will take them. This month, we spoke to Terry Allen '23, the new editor-in-chief of the UCLA Law Review. The San Francisco native and father of two is already an experienced student, having earned both a master's degree and PhD before enrolling in law school. His love of the classroom is evident not just in his résumé but in his enthusiasm and joy when the topic gets mentioned.

UCLA Law professor Laura E. Gómez has been named to the scholarly advisory committee of the new Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino. The committee will provide input on the museum’s plans to preserve, document, display, interpret and promote knowledge of U.S. Latino history, art, and culture.

Critical Race Theory and UCLA

The incredible legacy of UCLA School of Law Professor Kenneth L. Karst will be recognized through a new scholarship that supports students who are committed to racial equity and who embody Karst’s spirit of collegiality. The Kenneth L. Karst Scholarship in Law was established through the generosity of Karst’s family and the newly formed Kenneth L. Karst Racial Equity Foundation. A number of Karst’s students and colleagues have also made contributions in support of the scholarship.

UCLA School of Law Distinguished Professor Jerry Kang has been nominated to serve on the National Council on the Humanities, the 26-member board that advises the chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and promotes the advancement of culture and scholarship nationwide.

President Biden announced the nomination of Kang and several others to the council on Oct. 29.

UCLA School of Law professor E. Tendayi Achiume has received a faculty chair appointment that recognizes her global leadership in scholarship and advocacy for human rights and the dignity of migrants and refugees around the world. She is now the inaugural holder of the Alicia Miñana Chair in Law, which was designed to support a faculty member preferably with interests at the intersection of human rights and immigration or migration law.
