UCLA Law alumnus David Epstein

Long before he gave back to UCLA School of Law in a historic act of generosity that led to the naming of the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy in his honor, Epstein stood out among the law school’s stellar alumni base for his excellence in service, practice, philanthropy, and engagement.

When the latest Skadden Fellowship recipients were announced on Nov. 23, two UCLA School of Law students and one recent graduate learned that their careers as public interest lawyers had received a tremendous boost.

UCLA School of Law Professor from Practice Ahilan Arulanantham presented oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 8 in the case of FBI v. Fazaga.

Arulanantham is faculty co-director of the Center for Immigration Law and Policy at UCLA Law. Among the nation’s leading advocates for immigrants’ rights, he joined the law school in 2020 after a long tenure as senior counsel at the ACLU of Southern California, where he represented clients in several landmark immigration cases.

More than 200 members of the UCLA School of Law community gathered on Nov. 3 for the law school’s fourth U. Serve L.A. celebration, an event that this year also marked the conclusion of UCLA Law’s second Public Service Challenge. Students, staff, and faculty members joined in recognizing the community’s remarkable pro bono, public interest, and public service contributions.

To meet the growing need for pro bono legal representation to address myriad social challenges in Los Angeles, UCLA School of Law has launched the Judge Rand Schrader Pro Bono Program. The program brings all of UCLA Law’s existing pro bono opportunities under one umbrella, enhancing those offerings and creating new ones.

UCLA Law Professor E. Tendayi Achiume

UCLA School of Law professor E. Tendayi Achiume has received a faculty chair appointment that recognizes her global leadership in scholarship and advocacy for human rights and the dignity of migrants and refugees around the world. She is now the inaugural holder of the Alicia Miñana Chair in Law, which was designed to support a faculty member preferably with interests at the intersection of human rights and immigration or migration law.
