Advanced Judicial Process - Judicial Externship

This two-unit course examines the judicial process and supports judicial externs.  Readings and discussion will address: the roles of judges, clerks, research attorneys and externs in drafting judicial opinions; judicial ethics and confidentiality; sincerity and justification in crafting judicial opinions; precedent and publication of judicial opinions; judicial bias and implicit bias; lawyering styles; the role of settlement in a system with heavy caseloads; and judicial selection and retention. On occasion there may be guest speakers. Grading is based on writing assignments during the term, class participation and attendance, and a final paper. NOTE: This course is open only to students on judicial externships.This course was previously numbered 450A.
