LAW 207

Community Property

Business & Tax Law

This course is a detailed examination of the California community property system, which has long regulated property relations between husband and wife during marriage and at its termination by divorce or death.  The California community property system now also regulates the property relations of California registered domestic partners.  Community property raises many questions about the nature of conjugal relationships and the various forms of gainful human activity.  Community Property is a California bar examination subject, and the course covers issues that are likely to be raised on that examination.  There are no prerequisites.Because Community Property is a relatively narrow subject involving the interplay of state legislation and case law, the course is structured to enable students to develop their analytic and oral skills.  To allow all students ample opportunity to participate, the "assigned expert" system is used.  Participation as an assigned expert is a course requirement.  Consequently, enrolled students must place themselves on the seating chart no later than the third day of class. Please review faculty specific descriptions for additional details regarding each offering.
