LAW 732

Land Development Simulation

Business & Tax Law, Environmental Law, Public Interest Law

This simulation course explores legal issues related to land development, including building and zoning codes, architectural controls, environmental review, land division, and easements. In-class exercises are designed to teach substantive law through engagement with fact patterns and primary sources such as city ordinances, maps, and title and environmental reports with the goal of strengthening practical skills.

Class sessions will begin with study of relevant law and review and discussion of fact patterns. Next, students working in teams will develop strategy and outline arguments in order to represent their clients (e.g. landowner-applicant, regulatory agency, litigant in judicial challenge of project). Last, in a simulated forum (e.g. private negotiation, public meeting, courtroom) teams will advocate their positions or give objective advice. Grading will be based on demonstrated preparation for class, participation and performance in exercises, and take-home writing assignments, with no final exam.
