LAW 106

Real Estate Law

This course is a concentrated course on the wide range of legal issues professionals will face
in the real estate industry. Over the semester we will start with overviews of general principles
of different areas of law, then move to more concrete applications of those general principles
in specific subject areas. The course will also emphasize practical insights on how to manage
legal issues. The general principles lectures will cover topics such as the sources of law,
contracts, property, mortgage law, environmental law, and tax – subjects that are each taught
over the course of a semester or year in law school. The more concrete lectures will apply
those general concepts to letters of intent, term sheets, real estate purchase agreements, title
reports, surveys, leases, financing instruments, and partnership and limited liability company
operating agreements, among others. The course is expected to include lectures from guests
who are experts in certain areas of real estate to provide a more in-depth review and discussion
on their particular areas of expertise.
