LAW 618

Your Professional Identity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Law

This course will examine skills essential to building one’s professional identity and
communicating effectively within a diverse environment, including clients, colleagues, the
government, and the public. We will work to identify, understand, and engage in DEI issues to
build emotional intelligence and enhance students’ success in their practice and their legal
environment, ranging from the courtroom to the boardroom, and from public interest to private
practice.

This course fulfills the underlying requirements of ABA Standard 303(b) and (c) by offering
insight into “the values and responsibilities of the legal profession and its members [through
including] cross-cultural competency, equal access, and elimination of bias, discrimination, and
racism.”

Students will be assessed on a letter-graded basis. They will complete four short response papers
throughout the session for 60 percent of the grade. Class participation will be 20 percent of the
grade. Students will have a final 15-20 page paper due for 20 percent of the grade.
