Thomas A. Kirschbaum Scholarship in Tax Law

The Thomas A. Kirschbaum Scholarship in Tax Law provides financial and other support to students who are interested in pursuing careers in tax law and policy and places these students at the center of a robust and supportive network of tax law professionals, including previous Scholarship recipients, other UCLA Law alumni and UCLA Law faculty. These merit-based scholarships are awarded annually to incoming students who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for tax law and policy, as well as demonstrated a commitment to public service, leadership and helping build the communities and organizations of which they are members.

In addition to receiving financial support, Kirschbaum Scholars meet periodically with previous student and alumni recipients of the scholarship, other UCLA Law alumni and members of the UCLA Law tax faculty in various settings. At these gatherings, the scholars receive mentorship and coaching guidance with respect to their law school studies, job opportunities and career paths, as well as work together on ways to give back to and build the UCLA Law community and the school's tax law programs. Between meetings, the scholars connect in the halls of the school and via telephone and email to discuss matters of mutual interest.

In the spirit of the scholarship, Kirschbaum Scholars are expected to take an active role in the school's tax law activities and programs, and to help mentor and coach their successors, as second and third year students and thereafter, when they have graduated and embarked on their careers in law and business.

The scholarship is named for the late Thomas A. Kirschbaum '77, an eminent tax and executive compensation lawyer at Ervin, Cohen and Jessup and Irell & Manella. Following his death in 2010, Kirschbaum's family and friends — led by James Barrall '75, Kirschbaum's former partner and a retired partner of Latham & Watkins who is Senior Fellow in Residence at the school's Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy— endowed the scholarship in his memory, in perpetuity. The scholarship was first awarded in 2011.

Our 11 Kirschbaum Scholars have already established a special community and look forward to growing it in the years to come.

Please consider joining us as a member of this special community.

"The Kirschbaum Scholarship immediately connected me with talented peers and generous mentors who were committed to helping me lay the foundation for my legal career. I soon learned that Tom Kirschbaum was passionate about his profession, devoted to his friends and family, and a selfless mentor to younger attorneys. I have benefitted greatly from my membership in the Kirschbaum Scholarship community of students, professors, and lawyers who have helped me learn and work to try to achieve the personal, professional and community ideals that Tom embodied."
