UCLA School of Law professor Ingrid Eagly has been selected for the Fulbright-Schuman European Union Affairs Program, which provides opportunities for scholars to conduct research and engage in academic exchanges related to E.U. policies and institutions.

During her Fulbright, Eagly is based in Florence, Italy, at UNICEF-Innocenti, UNICEF’s Global Office of Research and Foresight. As the research arm for the United Nation’s Children Fund, UNICEF-Innocenti conducts essential research that supports UNICEF’s core mandate of ensuring that children’s rights are protected.

Eagly’s research project examines access to legal information and lawyers for children seeking asylum in the E.U., a topic of increasing importance with the rising number of migrant children arriving to Europe. Asylum is also an area that is undergoing significant change as E.U. member states work to implement the new E.U. Pact on Migration and Asylum.

“I am deeply honored to be part of the Fulbright community and to have this incredible opportunity to better understand how children engaged in migration can be supported and have their rights and well-being protected,” Eagly says. “I look forward to developing a lasting relationship between UNICEF and the University of California, and to having the experience shape my teaching and the opportunities that are available for UCLA students.”

Eagly is a leading expert on immigration law, and her work is widely cited by scholars, policymakers and the press. She serves on the advisory board of the UCLA Center for the Study of International Migration and is an editor of the ImmigrationProf Blog.

Through its many distinguished alumni, the Fulbright Program seeks to increase mutual understanding and promote cultural exchange. Eagly’s Fulbright-Schuman grant is administered by the Fulbright Commission in Belgium and jointly funded by the U.S. Department of State and the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission.
