UCLA School of Law students Erin Delman ’20 and Ajwang Rading ’20 have received the second-annual Skye Donald Spirit of Community Award, which is presented each year to students who demonstrate integrity, generosity and a focus on the well-being of the law school community.
Both second-year students at UCLA Law, Delman and Rading each were nominated by many members of the UCLA Law community, including their student peers, staff members and professors. A faculty committee reviewed the nominations and selected the winners. In addition to the recognition, which is UCLA Law’s highest honor for student service to the law school community, Delman and Rading receive scholarship funds to support their legal education.
Delman serves as co-ambassador for the California Rare Action Network, a nonprofit organization that advocates for people impacted by rare diseases. She has also worked as an advocate for foster youth through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and is dedicated to researching and sharing information on environmental issues. She holds a bachelor of science from Union College in Schenectady, New York, and earned a master of science in earth system science from UC Irvine.
In nominating Delman for the award, her peers noted her good cheer and integrity. In particular, they cited her focus on the well-being of others, including consulting one-on-one with people who are going through hard times and baking customized cupcakes for classmates.
Rading serves as the co-chair and president of the Black Law Students Association at UCLA Law, where he is also co-founder and president of the Policy Lab and a staff member of the UCLA Law Review. Among his many endeavors to promote civil and human rights, Rading has worked at the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, and as a legislative fellow for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. He received a bachelor of arts from UCLA and studied at Harvard Business School.
Rading’s nomination cited his uncommon ability to make others feel welcome, heard and valued. During his two years at UCLA Law, his peers noted, Rading has earned a positive reputation for urging his colleagues on by stating, “You are a champion! Never give up!”
The Skye Donald Spirit of Community Award honors the memory of UCLA Law lecturer Skye Donald, a beloved teacher and talented lawyer who brought out the best in her students and colleagues before she died of cancer in 2016 at age 43. The award and associated Skye Donald Memorial Fund foster continued collegiality, compassion and service in order to enhance the UCLA Law experience for award recipients and the entire community.
