A UCLA Law love story: Robert Becher ’97 and Carolyn Yashari Becher ’98
It all started with a glance in the hallway when 1L Carolyn Yashari Becher ’98 noticed 2L Robert Becher ’97, "especially his long hair and nice smile," she recalls. The following year, a mutual friend introduced them at a Student Bar Association bar review event at the old San Francisco Saloon, and the rest is history.
Nearly 30 years later, the couple looks back on their romance and favorite memories from their time together at UCLA School of Law.
Tell us a bit about how you two met!
Carolyn: Well, I noticed Rob in the hallway when I was a first-year student — especially his long hair and nice smile. Then the following fall, a mutual friend introduced us at bar review at the old San Francisco Saloon. We started meeting on a bench in the courtyard between classes, and the day I turned in my Law Review comment, Rob asked me out to dinner to celebrate. We were inseparable from that moment on.
What are some of your favorite memories from law school?
Rob: I will always remember the camaraderie among my classmates in my first-year section. Law school was demanding, but there was a real sense that we were in it together. I also valued my clinical experience, particularly helping represent a group of car wash workers in a wage and hour case. When the owner agreed to pay their back wages, it was incredibly rewarding and showed me how meaningful legal advocacy can be.
Carolyn: I have so many great memories from that time. One of my favorites is a lecture Professor Jerry Kang gave in his Civil Procedure class on the last day of class. He told us a story of a jewel box and how the law was about finding a rare gem inside. I loved that analogy. Another fond memory I have is when I opened an issue of The Docket and saw that we were the first majority women class! I also gained so much real-world experience externing at Los Padrinos Juvenile Court and Bet Tzedek Legal Services.
What have you both been up to since graduation?
Carolyn: I practiced transactional real estate law at Cox, Castle & Nicholson before becoming a contract lawyer, all while starting a family. I’m co-founder of HopSkipDrive, a technology company that solves complex transportation challenges where there is a heightened need for safety, equity, and care. I now consult for tech companies, political organizations, and nonprofits.
Rob: I’m a partner at Quinn Emanuel focusing on commercial litigation. And we’re also the proud parents to three daughters: Gabriela, Maya, and Eliana.
Looking back, is there any advice you’d give your 1L-self or any 1Ls today?
Rob: Be confident.
Carolyn: Yes! You wouldn't have been admitted if they didn't think you could do it.
