UCLA School of Law will host its first-ever Public Service Challenge from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3. During the five-day period, the entire UCLA Law community – including students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and families – will be encouraged to vote and volunteer as poll workers, do election protection work or engage in other pro bono or public service opportunities to help the Los Angeles community.

In  a new report, UCLA’s Criminal Justice Program (CJP) argues that proposed alternatives to the money bail system are too often constrained by the notion that risk assessment tools are the only or the most effective alternative.

In its first competition since earning the No. 1 national ranking, UCLA School of Law’s A. Barry Cappello Trial Team on Oct. 4 won the Summit Cup, a trial advocacy competition hosted by University of Denver Sturm College of Law that is considered among the most prestigious and difficult trial competitions in the country.

Jennifer L. Mnookin, who has served as the dean of UCLA School of Law since 2015, has been reappointed to a five-year term, UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Emily A. Carter announced in a message to university leadership and the law school community on Sept. 24.

CEOs, health care administrators, entertainment industry executives, journalists, nonprofit leaders and even a UCLA Bruin football defensive back are among the first 41 students to enter the new UCLA School of Law Master of Legal Studies program this year.

UCLA School of Law's Clinical Program students, working together with Sanjukta M. Paul, a civil rights attorney with the firm Rothner, Segall, Greenstone & Leheny, secured a victory for catering food truck operators in a case challenging the constitutionality of a city ordinance that has been aggressively implemented against these vendors in Los Angeles since the beginning of 2008.

Jocelyn Samuels, the executive director of UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy, was confirmed on Sept. 23 to a seat on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency that enforces federal laws barring workplace discrimination.

UCLA School of Law has received a $15 million donation from the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria to advance the study and practice of Native American law. The gift is the largest-ever contribution that a tribe has made to a law school and one of the biggest in history from a tribe to a university. The funds will be dedicated to scholarships for Native American and other students interested in pursuing careers as tribal legal advocates.
