Protecting Human Rights and Preserving Civil Liberties: The Role of Courts in a Democracy

UCLA School of Law, together with the Promise Institute for Human Rights, is proud to invite you to a special discussion with Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi of O. P. Jindal Global University, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Member of Parliament, India. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Jonathan Zasloff, with introductory remarks by Dean Michael Waterstone. Dr. Singhvi’s talk will focus on the need for protecting human rights and preserving civil liberties in societies based upon the rule of law. He will draw upon both the Indian Supreme Court’s jurisprudence and the democratic evolution of institutions and rights in India to underscore the role and responsibilities of courts in a democracy.
