J.D. Student Ambassador: Shane Ball

Shane Ball

Hello, all! I am Shane Ball and I am a 2L and a Distinguished Scholar at UCLA School of Law. Originally from San Diego, I mostly grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado. I majored in economics and history at the University of Colorado Boulder, and minored in Jewish studies and leadership studies. I completed a Jewish studies capstone and an economics honors thesis, which earned summa cum laude. While an undergrad, I served as an intern in the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, which confirmed that becoming a lawyer was the right path for me. I am proud to continue to support my alma mater by serving on the Community Advisory Board for the Program in Jewish Studies.

I chose UCLA Law because it values the reasons why I wanted to go to law school. At UCLA Law, we offer intellectual rigor and a community that is humble, kind, and committed to public service. Additionally, I knew I wanted to practice in California, and UCLA Law’s network on the West Coast is very strong. There’s no better place to be a law student than Los Angeles—both for the professional opportunities and for the quality of life here. During my first year, I was a 1L Representative for OUTLaw (LGBTQ students organization), a tour guide, a volunteer for an El Centro pro bono clinic and for the Williams Institute, and I participated in the moot court 1L competition. I was also staff on the Dukeminier Awards Journal as a 1L and am the Journal’s Senior Editor this year.

I worked as a Research Assistant at the UCLA Law Library during my 1L summer, researching for two professors on our faculty. I had an amazing summer and learned so much about legal research. I loved my job so much that I am continuing to work as an RA part-time during the school year as a 2L. Next summer, I will be a summer associate in the Los Angeles office of Covington & Burling, a Washington, DC-based global law firm. I am excited to work with Covington’s investigations and litigation practice groups.

I absolutely love UCLA Law because I made the right choice for me. We’re here to help you gather information so you can make the right decision for you. Feel free to reach out to me at the email below with any questions you have about UCLA Law. I look forward to getting to know you!
