Members of the UCLA School of Law community are mourning the death of Charles “Chuck” Williams, a celebrated philanthropist and businessman who co-founded the Williams Institute at the law school in 2001. Williams died at home on April 12, 2023. He was 88 years old.

When Khaled Beydoun ’04 set foot on UCLA School of Law’s campus as a 1L, he could never have imagined how quickly the world would change around him.
Two weeks into law school, the 9/11 terror attacks happened, and Beydoun, who is Arab American and Muslim, felt that his community became collateral damage in the aftermath.

Eileen A. Scallen, a longtime teacher of courses in civil procedure and evidence, whose uncommon dedication to supporting students at UCLA School of Law has been roundly applauded since she joined the law school a decade ago, earned the 2023 Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching.

UCLA School of Law professor Scott Cummings has been awarded a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship to support his research and writing about the impact that lawyers have played in backsliding democracies around the world.


UCLA School of Law’s Rose Chan Loui, a dynamic legal leader in community-engaged nonprofits, has joined the board of directors of the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles.

Elizabeth Franco ’15 has been telling stories for as long as she can remember. A Double Bruin, she majored in communication studies as a UCLA undergrad and earned her J.D. from UCLA School of Law. Today, Franco remembers that her dual role as legal advocate and storyteller clicked when she was a law student interning with the ACLU.

J.D. students are required to fulfill two requirements for the program. Requirement A is that a student complete two of the “core” courses, with a grade of B- or better in each course. Requirement B is that a student take at least four of the other upper-level courses from a list of all technology-related classes, for a total of at least 12 credits, with a grade of B- or better in each course.
