The UCLA School of Law Trial Team won the American Association of Justice's Student Trial Advocacy Competition Southern California regional tournament in early March, giving the school consecutive championships at this event and sending the Bruins to AAJ's national tournament next month in Philadelphia.

UCLA entered two squads. Kyle DeCamp '19, Delaney Gold-Diamond '21, Kian Khajooei '20 and Aidan Welsh ('19) won the tournament with an undefeated record. Blake Berich '21, Nick Dyess '21, Jack Eyers '21 and Tiffany Sarchet '21 won two of their three trials.

UCLA School of Law alumnus Andrei Iancu ’96

Distinguished UCLA School of Law alumnus Andrei Iancu ’96 returned on Feb. 22 to offer an inside look from the highest reaches of the federal government into the most pressing issues in patent law.

A longtime patent-law lecturer at UCLA Law and former managing partner of Irell & Manella, Iancu was confirmed as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in early 2018. As the head of the USPTO, he oversees one of the primary federal agencies that govern intellectual property rights.

Rapid developments in the sports-betting industry following a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision were the focus of a conference featuring prominent sports agents, executives and attorneys on Feb. 8 at UCLA School of Law.

The event, “All Bets Are On,” was the latest convening of the In Series, sponsored by UCLA Law’s Ziffren Center for Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law.  

Bending Toward the Sun

In a gripping presentation on April 2 at UCLA School of Law, alumna Leslie Gilbert-Lurie ’84 returned with her mother, Rita Lurie, to discuss the impact that the Holocaust has had on generations of people in her family and the ways in which public service for human rights has enriched their lives.

UCLA alumni Ralph and Shirley Shapiro received the UCLA Medal, the campus’ highest honor, on April 2, at the Chancellor’s residence.

“When we talk about service as a core mission of UCLA — alongside research and education — two of the names that always come to my mind are Ralph and Shirley Shapiro,” UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said at the medal ceremony. “They met at UCLA, formed a beautiful partnership here and have both made UCLA very proud. My hope is that UCLA will continue to graduate students who share their values and will extend their legacy.”

UCLA School of Law's Black Law Students Association honored legal leaders in the African-American community and raised more than $120,000 towards a new student scholarship at the group's 50th Anniversary Gala on April 4.

The event also had some Hollywood sizzle, with remarks from actors Garcelle Beauvais, Terry Crews, Kendrick Sampson and Courtney B. Vance, among others.

Professor Beth Colgan became the 42nd winner of UCLA School of Law’s highest faculty honor, the Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching, at a ceremony on April 22.

The award, founded in 1979 by famed legal publisher William Rutter, is presented annually to leading legal educators at five top California law schools.

Several members of the UCLA School of Law Class of 2013 returned to campus on April 10 to share with current students their perspectives on working in entertainment law, in the second annual Five Years Out program sponsored by the Ziffren Center on Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law.

Southern California civil rights attorney Dale K. Galipo ’84

Prominent Southern California civil rights attorney Dale K. Galipo ’84 returned to UCLA School of Law on April 8 to deliver the 21st Irving H. Green Memorial Lecture, “Becoming a Civil Rights Trial Lawyer.”

Stuart Biegel

Stuart Biegel, a longtime member of the faculty at the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and UCLA School of Law died on April 3. He was 73.

A renowned expert in the fields of education law and technology law, Biegel focused his scholarship and teaching on the intersection of technology, privacy and disability rights in both K-12 and higher education.
