
More than 40 graduates of UCLA School of Law traveled from all over California to the inaugural black law alumni reunion celebration on March 16.

Promoting a theme of vision, empowerment and impact, UCLA School of Law’s fast-growing organization of women lawyers convened for the 2019 UCLA Law Women LEAD Summit on March 1.

Amid a long-running financial crisis aggravated by recession and the ravages of hurricanes Maria and Irma, Puerto Rico and its bondholders have reached a deal that will bring billions of dollars of relief to the island’s economy, thanks in substantial part to two UCLA School of Law professors.
Daniel Bussel and Kenneth Klee were appointed in 2016 to advise on a complex and hotly contested restructuring of $18 billion in bond debt and a related tussle over Puerto Rico’s sales tax.

Three UCLA School of Law students have won prestigious fellowships through which they will serve immigrants and indigent defendants after they graduate in May. In addition, one recent UCLA Law graduate earned a fellowship for his work in helping people who are incarcerated in California.

UCLA School of Law student Cameron Berkowitz ’19 scored the top prize in the Recording Academy’s 21st Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition for his essay “Streaming in the Free Market: Releasing Songwriters from the Compulsory Music License.”

The next big collaboration between technology and entertainment took center stage at “Hollywood Analytica,” the 43rd Annual UCLA Entertainment Symposium on March 15 and 16, where many of the industry’s biggest stars met to discuss the legal and economic impacts of innovations in an industry grappling with rapid evolution.

UCLA School of Law has been named the No. 1 entertainment law school in America for a sixth straight year by The Hollywood Reporter.
In total, 20 alumni of UCLA Law appeared on The Hollywood Reporter’s 2019 lists of Power Lawyers and legends in entertainment law.
Five alumni ranked as legal legends: John Branca ’75, Melanie Cook ’78 and Kenneth Ziffren ’65 of Ziffren Brittenham; Kenneth Kleinberg ’67 of Kleinberg Lange Cuddy & Carlo; and Schuyler Moore ’81 of Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger.

The UCLA Trial Team finished second in the National Ethics Trial Competition, which evaluates students on their ability to advocate on behalf of their clients while maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct.

The Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy and UCLA School of Law brought a dozen teams of law students from around the region together on March 1 for the inaugural UCLA Transactional Law Competition. The event was the culmination of a six-week simulation that allowed students to hone their business negotiation and writing skills before a group of expert judges.

The Program on Understanding Law, Science and Evidence at UCLA Law (PULSE) has launched a platform to publish and promote cutting-edge scholarship on law and policy governing artificial intelligence.
