Located in the heart of Hollywood and with ties across the world, the Ziffren Institute for Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law is a student’s gateway to a meaningful, lifelong career in the technology, intellectual property, entertainment and sports communities.
The process starts in the first year, when students are invited to a wide array of talks, lunches and alumni events with executives from leading enterprises such as Electronic Arts, The Walt Disney Company, Microsoft and Warner Bros. In the second year, students not only take core classes in subjects including entertainment law, patent law, film finance and copyright, but also can participate in hand-picked externships with Los Angeles’s best technology firms, talent agencies, unions and production companies.
Summer is an opportunity for yet another immersive experience, either at a law firm or in-house, in Los Angeles or beyond. The third year provides greater opportunities to network with UCLA alumni and friends, while also offering on-campus experiences including the school’s new patent and trademark clinics, or the ever-popular sports law simulation where students negotiate against or under the supervision of real-world executives from teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
After graduation, the opportunities at the Ziffren Institute continue, with both recent and not-so-recent alumni using the center’s resources and events to develop and deepen close professional and personal connections.
With initial funding of $5 million in 2015 and an additional $6 million in 2019, the institute is doggedly pursuing its central mission: offer students the skills and relationships they need to position themselves for successful careers as lawyers, policymakers and leaders in the content, technology, sports and entertainment industries.
